The good news is that there’s no “Second Sock Syndrome” when it comes to making stockings for the holidays!This project showcases how the same item can be made with different weight yarns on the original TURTLE Loom™ and the TURTLE “fine sett”.
For the first stocking I found some Christmas brights in malabrigo Worsted, in 4 Saphire Green and 024 Vermillion at The Sated Sheep.
The stocking in the center of the picture is made of one of my favorite sock yarns from Crafting My Chaos, variegated Christmas Time , with a 5682 white Cascade Heritage hem and heel.
The stocking to the right is made of Plymouth Yarn galway Worsted from the Yarnivore in 742 Fired Brick Heather and 754 Turtle Heather which add a country character.
Here are a few more ideas for variations:
- Use scrap hexagons or variegated yarns to make delightful patchwork stockings.
- Add a crocheted trim to the top, or fold over the tops and add buttons, or tassels, or pompoms.
- Embroider initials or small motifs onto the hexagons (see the Weave and Stitch Along if you need help to get started).
- Weave a buttonhole into one hem hexagon for easy hanging.
- Use the same pattern to make larger stockings on the TexaTURTLE™ Loom.

Could you weave socks to wear? Well, if you shorten the stockings pattern by one round and you’ll usually wear women shoe size 8-10 … they’ll fit. They won’t fit snug, though, and of course don’t stretch. One reason why people welcomed knitting in the 16th century is that it was easier to knit fitted footwear. But for the fun of it … sure, why not weave?
